Self-Care has been around for as long as we know it but why recently is it such a trending topic among our generation? Perhaps because nowadays with new technologies and the constantly on the go lifestyles we have all adapted in our culture it is harder than ever to live mindfully. We now need specific rituals and time set aside to take care of ourselves and calm our minds any way we can. As I sit here on a Saturday night with a face mask on and candles lit (yes..I said on a Saturday night...) I thought I would take the time to share with you some of my favorite self-care rituals!
1. Physical Activity
Exercise has always been the best stress reducer for me and can help completely alter my mood. The key is finding what type of exercising works best for you and that you enjoy. For example, if I want to blow off steam I will sprint on a treadmill or take a boxing class and other days if I want to clear my head I might take a yoga class. I definitely am lucky to live in a city that has so many fun and cool classes. Some of my favorite studios are Rumble and y7! Once I realized how much it benefits both my physical and mental health and how fun it can be I began to love working out!
2. Beauty Rituals
There is something to be said about the "look good, feel good" mentality. When I feel like I look my best it completely transcends into my thoughts and energy. By maintaining a strong regimen for my skin, hair, and nails I can make sure I am on my A-Game! I do the same daily skin-care routine using Origins GinZing cleanser, eye cream, and moisturizer with a few times a week ramping it up with a face-mask and using a derma-roller which I have found to have great benefits for my skin! One-love is my favorite mask on the market right now (and all natural!)
3. Listen to some music (and maybe even dance or sing a little)
Another instant mood booster is as easy as turning on some of your favorite tunes! Your favorite songs generally spark great memories and will ignite those happy feelings and thoughts associated with them. By no means am I a good singer but I also noticed that belting out some jams also brings out the same feeling (yes this is unfortunate for my roomies)
4. Meditation
I understand that meditating seems intimidating for a lot of people and it is hard to get in a routine of doing but even just five minutes a day can help calm the mind in a powerful way. Try downloading one of the apps Headspace or Calm. Both are similar guided meditation apps but a little bit different in style.
5. Light some candles and make yourself a cup of tea
This is more so a wintertime/night time tradition of mine but easily one of the most calming moments of my week! There are so many great teas out there nowadays that help with calming and sleep as well so definitely look into those if sleep is a problem for you. (I recommend all-natural sleepytime teas)
